The Department of Communication at the University of Ottawa invites applications for a tenure-stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor specializing in Political Communication. Building and expanding on our strengths in this area, this position is focused on various aspects of political communication including, but not limited to, how political information is spread, relationships among various political actors (journalists, politicians, civil society, citizens), equity and diversity in political communication systems, and communicational aspects of the governance of just societies. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research help situate debates within Canada about law, ethics, security, polarization and/or policy in wider social, informational, and communicative contexts. The Department welcomes candidates who conduct empirical studies using a variety of methods, as well as critical approaches. The start date is expected to be July 1, 2023.

Position: Assistant professor; higher ranks may be considered under exceptional circumstances. 

Duties: The functions of a member of the academic staff include, in varying proportions: a) teaching activities; b) scholarly activities and research; c) academic service activities, d) supervision of undergraduate and graduate students.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, in media studies, journalism, public relations and/or organizational communication, in French and in English.

The candidate will be expected to conduct research in political communication resulting in peer reviewed scholarly publications, with the ability to attract, develop, supervise, train and retain excellent trainees, students, and future researchers, as well as external research funding.

A strong commitment to participate in the administrative activities of the department is required.

The successful candidate will be expected to exercise leadership in forging research collaborations and in creating new courses in collaboration with members of the Department focusing on political communication and related topics.

Terms: Tenure-track position

Wage: Salary scale for an Assistant Professor starts at $89,622 (for a start date of July 1, 2023).

Required Skills:

The successful candidate will be a scholar in Political Communication with the following qualifications:

  • A doctorate (Ph.D.) in Communication studies or a related field in the humanities and social sciences, by July 1, 2023;
  • Evidence of successful teaching at a post-secondary institution;
  • Evidence of an established and innovative research program and a record of refereed publications and scholarly conferences;
  • An ability to attract external funding;
  • Active bilingualism in French and English will be required to receive tenure (courses and individual tutoring available for professors);
  • The candidate's areas of scholarly expertise should include political communication broadly, such as how political information is spread, relationships among various political actors (journalists, politicians, civil society, citizens), equity and diversity in political communication systems, and communicational aspects of the governance of just societies.
  • Evidence of a commitment to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion within research and teaching.
