As part of a major expansion of its research programs in 2021, the Faculty of Education at the University of Ottawa invites applications for a tenure-track position.

The Faculty of Education is located on the unceded ancestral territories of the Anishinabé-Algonquin people in the heart of the nation's capital. Title of the Position: Assistant Professor, Anti-Racism Education (Teaching in the Francophone Sector)

Preferential Hiring of Racialized and Indigenous Candidates

The hiring for this position will be done in accordance with the University’s initiatives to combat systemic racial discrimination as announced by the University President in January 2021, which aim among other things, to remedy the under-representation of racialized peoples and Indigenous peoples within the ranks of its faculty members.  As such, only qualified applications from racialized or Indigenous peoples will be considered and evaluated for the position.  Those who wish to be considered as part of one of these groups are asked to self-identify by completing the confidential questionnaire at the time of submitting an application.

We are looking for candidates who can contribute to current research on anti-racist education in Canadian and international francophone settings. The research agenda would include anti-oppressive and inclusive education, anti-colonial perspectives, diasporas, critical theory, human rights, and the future prospects of racialized people.  This research could also be at the intersection of fields such as history and philosophy of education, social science, curriculum studies, and cultural studies.

We invite candidates who are committed to strengthening our existing interdisciplinary relations with other faculties (e.g., Social Sciences, Arts, Science, Medicine, Health Sciences), school boards, and community organizations who seek to enhance the research and educational opportunities specifically for racialized youth here in Canada and the world.

Duties: The functions of a member of the academic staff include, in varying proportions: a) teaching activities; b) scholarly activities revealed by research, artistic or literary creation, or professional work; c) academic service activities, d) supervision of graduate students.

Terms: Tenure-track position (Assistant Professor)

Wage:  Salary scale for an Assistant Professor starts at $89,622 (as of May 1, 2023)

Benefits package: The University of Ottawa provides a complete benefits package, which includes long-term disability, basic group life insurance, supplementary health insurance, University of Ottawa Pension Plan and optional life insurance, as well as relocation expenses.

Skills requirements:

  • Education: Doctorate in Education or equivalent in a field related to the position.
  • Work experience:
  • A demonstrated excellent research track record in Antiracist Education or related field of studies.
  • A demonstrated ability to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels in a collaborative interdisciplinary setting.
  • Excellent communication skills in English. Passive knowledge of the other official language in Canada is a requirement for tenure. English-French bilingualism is an asset.
