The Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa is seeking applications for a tenure-track position in commercial law.

About the Common Law Section

The Common Law Section offers Juris Doctor degrees in English and in French.  Together with the Civil Law Section, the Common Law Section offers master’s and doctoral programs.  The Common Law Section has over 1,200 students in JD programs and over 200 in graduate programs.  We are an innovative and international faculty dedicated to inclusive teaching and research, located in the heart of Canada’s capital.  

Position title: Assistant or associate professorAppointment at the higher rank of associate professor will only be considered should the successful candidate have the appropriate level of experience and commensurate achievements.

Terms: This tenure-track position is in either the French Common Law Program, taught in French; the English Common Law Program, taught in English; or in both.  Applicants should note at the top of their cover letter which program(s) they are applying for.

Application deadline: The hiring committee will begin reviewing applications on September 30, 2022.  Applications received after that date will be considered until the position is filled.

Start date: July 1, 2023

Location of work: Faculty of Law, Common Law Section, University of Ottawa, 57 Louis Pasteur Pvt., Ottawa, ON Canada.

Salary and benefits: Salaries are competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. They typically range (as of May 1, 2023) from $89,622 to $123,951 for an assistant professor and from $98,999 to $171,917 for an associate professor.

The University of Ottawa offers a comprehensive, generous compensation package that includes long-term disability benefits, basic group life insurance, supplemental health insurance, a defined benefit pension plan, optional life insurance and reimbursement of eligible moving expenses. The Faculty also offers a reduced teaching load and seed money for research in the early stages after hiring.

Duties: Professors’ functions include teaching, an active scholarly agenda, academic service to the Faculty and University, and supervision of graduate students.

Skills requirements

  • Education: An undergraduate degree in common law, and either a doctorate in law or a related discipline (or enrolment in a soon-to-be-completed doctoral program), or an LLM. For applicants currently enrolled in a doctoral program, their supervisor must confirm that it is reasonably likely that their dissertation will be submitted prior to appointment. 
  • Work experience: Demonstrated expertise in commercial Law, with related research interests.  Of particular interest are applicants with an interest in private law theory, contracts, bankruptcy, secured transactions or business organizations.  The University is also interested in re-establishing a business law/entrepreneurship clinic.  Applicants interested in such an initiative should clearly note this in their application. 
  • A superior academic record, a strong background in research and publication, including external research funding or the potential for such funding, and the capacity for excellence in teaching and contribution to the academic life and governance of the Faculty.
  • Strong communication skills in either English or French. Passive knowledge of the other official language in Canada is a requirement for tenure.

  • Description of pedagogical interests
  • Transcripts for each university degree received
  • Names and contact information of three references We don’t require letters at this time.
