The University of Ottawa’s Institute of Indigenous Research and Studies (IIRS) in the Faculty of Arts invites Indigenous scholars to apply for a full-time, tenure-stream faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, in the field of Indigenous Scientific Knowledge Systems. This position will involve an immediate 5-year secondment (with the possibility of renewal), at 50% time, to Ingenium, Canada’s Museums of Science and Innovation, which is a consortium of the Agriculture and Food Museum, Aviation and Space Museum, and Science and Technology Museum. This unique secondment will carry the additional title of Curator and is intended to support the production of courses, research, and student-centred engagement with the Ingenium collection(s) and exhibitions.

This position opens up possibilities of collaborations between Indigenous scholars and research and teaching programs throughout the University. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to work collaboratively with the Ingenium institutions with access to the collections best suited to their scholarly interests, develop courses around those collection and/or exhibit spaces, and contribute to the production of knowledge grounded in Indigenous intellectual knowledges involving science and innovation. At the same time, the successful candidate will join colleagues at IIRS who are committed to creating a place for Indigenous faculty and students engaged in scholarship pushing the boundaries of intellectual inquiry in a way that enhances our communities and builds strong and sustainable relationships. This position centres Indigenous peoples within the university and museum structures as active creators of scientific knowledge and not as passive objects within Western-scientific systems of knowledge. The field of scholarship is open and could include scholars from Indigenous Studies or another discipline within the humanities, social sciences, engineering, physical or biological sciences, or education.

The successful candidate will develop courses around Ingenium’s collections and/or exhibit spaces and contribute to the production of knowledge grounded in Indigenous intellectual perspectives toward science and innovation. At the same time, this work must fit within the mandate of one or more of the Ingenium museums and, in turn, contribute to the construction of a research agenda at the University of Ottawa by building an original, cutting-edge, high-impact research program focusing on, and involving, Indigenous people and communities. They will also expand the teaching capacity of IIRS through both the design of new courses for undergraduate and graduate students, and the supervision of graduate students.

Indigenous Studies at uOttawa began as a teaching program in January 2004, following years of effort on the part of the local Indigenous community, particularly the Algonquin Nation, to sensitize the University to the educational needs of their young people. The program was situated in the Faculty of Arts with the intention of bringing Indigenous people and their traditional and contemporary knowledges into university and teaching to avoid making Indigenous people into objects of study. In 2019, the Institute of Indigenous Research and Studies was formally created, with a mandate to hire a number of new faculty members.

Title of the position: Assistant Professor level, but higher ranks will be considered under exceptional circumstances.

Terms: tenure-track position

Wage: Salary scale for an Assistant Professor will start at $86,986 (as of May 1, 2020).

Applicants should possess a PhD in any field, although Indigenous Studies training and experience is encouraged, and be recognized as an outstanding scholar with previous experience in Indigenous knowledge production in the field of science as well as a track record with innovative research and engagement. Preferred candidates will be able to work constructively with Indigenous communities and knowledge keepers.
