The Institute of Indigenous Research and Studies (IIRS) in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ottawa is inviting applications from Metis persons for a full-time, tenure-stream faculty position at the rank of assistant or associate professor for the position of the Chair in Metis Research. The research chair was created in 2009 through an endowment from the Province of Ontario in collaboration with the Metis Nation of Ontario (MNO), as part of the University of Ottawa’s commitment to ensure the creation and dissemination of innovative research of relevance to Metis communities, by a Metis scholar. The successful Chairholder will join colleagues at IIRS who are committed to creating a place for Indigenous faculty and allies and students engaged in scholarship pushing the boundaries of intellectual inquiry in a way that enhances our communities and builds strong and sustainable relationships with the Metis.
This is position at IIRS is in the Faculty’s of Arts Indigenous Studies program, and is open to Metis scholars with backgrounds or research praxis focused in the humanities, social sciences, fine arts, law, education, and physical sciences. The Chair in Metis Research will expand the Metis research agenda at the University of Ottawa by building an original, cutting-edge, high-impact research program focusing on and involving Metis people and communities. The Chairholder will enhance the teaching capacity of IIRS’s programs through both the design of new courses for undergraduate and graduate students, and the supervision of graduate students, while engaging in community outreach and engagement related to issues impacting Metis people and communities based on their particular field of research.
Indigenous Studies at uOttawa began as a teaching program in January 2004 following years of effort on the part of the local Indigenous community, particularly the Algonquin Nation, to sensitize the University to the educational needs of their young people. The program was situated in the Faculty of Arts with the intention of bringing Indigenous people and their traditional and contemporary knowledges into university research praxis and teaching to avoid making Indigenous people into objects of study. In 2019, the Institute of Indigenous Research and Studies was formally created, with a mandate to hire a number of new faculty members. The IIRS is both a department of the Faculty of Arts and a interdisciplinary research institute.

Title of the position: Assistant Professor level, but higher ranks will be considered under exceptional circumstances.
Terms: The appointment as Chair in Metis Research is for a five-year term, renewable once, in a tenure-track position in IIRS. The Chairholder will receive a salary package and rank commensurate with their experience.
Wage: Salary scale for an Assistant Professor will start at $86,986 (as of May 1, 2020).
Benefits package: The University of Ottawa provides a complete benefits package which includes long term disability, basic group life insurance, supplementary health insurance, University of Ottawa Pension Plan and optional life insurance, as well as relocation expenses.
Applicants should possess a PhD in any field, although Indigenous Studies training and experience is strongly desired. Applicants should also be recognized as outstanding scholars with previous experience in Metis knowledge production and have a strong track record of innovative research and engagement. Preferred candidates will be able to work constructively with Metis communities and knowledge keepers.
Applications should be comprised of: 1) a letter of application outlining their suitability; 2) a curriculum vitae; 3) a sample of scholarly writing; 4) a course syllabi sample and recent teaching evaluations; 5) a proposed strategic plan to fulfill the Chair’s mandate (5 pages maximum); and 6) four reference letters sent directly by the referees (three scholarly references and one from a community member/community/organization with whom the candidate has already worked, attesting to their commitment to Indigenous protocols around research methods and praxis).
